The 2025 reporting seam in Burbank’s crime numbers

The only long, official, agency-level series for Burbank PD is the state’s crimes-and-clearances file. It is also the series that changes definition in 2025.

Through 2024 most California agencies still reported under the FBI’s Summary Reporting System. In 2025 the same OpenJustice table is on the NIBRS side of that changeover. A homicide is still a homicide. A pile of larcenies is not the same pile.

In the file we fetched, Burbank PD’s latest annual row is 2025: 352 violent offenses and 2,512 property offenses. Those are DOJ’s counts, filtered to this agency, not a rate we modeled.

We chart the series anyway, with a marker on 2025, because hiding the seam would be worse. We will not smooth it, and we will not publish a “crime is up” hed that depends on crossing it. Monthly BPD NIBRS PDFs, when parsed, will sit in a separate table rather than being added onto older SRS months.
